Last night, I finished "Justice for All!"
I already started on "Trials and Tribulations." I feel like I'm finally starting to catch up to the rest of the fandom. :')
That game was... pretty fucking epic. Especially 2-4. 2-4 is easily my favorite case of both games 1 and 2. There were so many things about that case that made me love all the characters more than I already did. It was intense and desperate, so I really got the chance to see the character's true colors... and I liked what I saw. Maya, Edgeworth, Gumshoe, Franziska... they all really had their moments.
And then there is Phoenix. Watching him go through that emotional rollercoster almost broke my heart. He truly is a fascinating character. So many times during that case I forgot that he was just a game sprite instead of a real person.
Another cool thing about the case is that it really elaborated on Phoenix's relationships with the other characters. I loved the scenes between him and Gumshoe... if I could have one real ally in this world, I'd want him to be just like Gumshoe. And then there were the scenes with him and Franziska! Their relationship is pretty baffling... I'd say that it's almost love/hate. That's really the best way I can describe it, even though that label isn't entirely accurate.
A major part of the whole game was Phoenix's relationship with Edgeworth. The climax of that was, of course, in 2-4. As a shipper, I really liked the interaction, but I felt it was on the melodramatic side. Then again, this is Edgeworth we are talking about: "Melodrama" is his middle name. For better or for worse, Phoenix and Edgeworth complete each other. Those who played this game will know that this is not my fangirl mind at work.
My absolute favorite thing about 2-4 was Phoenix's relationship with Maya. The case was sufficient proof that they really do love each other. It's canon. Now, what kind of love is up to the game players to decide for themselves. On the surface, they have a very strong brother/sister bond. However, the game really made me love Phoenix/Maya as a pairing. I think it's a wonder that the pairing isn't more popular... it's so cute! Of course, I can see why people wouldn't like it. All during the first game, I couldn't even see the pairing happening. At all.
Actually, the interesting thing about the game is that all the characters have buttons that are pressed differently by all the different characters. Despite this, one of the (major) characters are in a romantic relationship with with any of the other characters. It's a shipper's playground! It's a wonder that I don't see more variety in the fandom... but I can't complain. After finishing such an awesome game, I'm feeling extremely content.
